YouVersion is a fantastic Bible tool created by the folks at Lifechurch.tv which is totally free to use and jam-packed full of features.
With 16 English Bible translations including the Message, NIV, ESV, KJV, AMP, NCV and TNIV (plus countless more in other languages) the bible is more acessible than ever before. The layout is clear – searching for a specific verse or word is easy, and there are no annoying banner adverts fighting for your attention.
Becoming a member of the site is free, easy and quiet (e.g. you don’t get lots of annoying e-mails!). This opens up a whole new world of possibilities. For example, select a verse and you can read contributions from youversion users as well as adding your own, for those personal notes which aren’t for sharing with the world you have your own journal, and if reading gets too much you can listen to the passage being read out!
A recently added feature is the option to follow one of more than 20 reading plans, covering various parts of the Bible. You can choose a length of time to suit your reading style and speed, and then when you login in the readings will be ready for you to complete (I’m currently partway through reading the four Gospels in thirty days).
But for me the winning feature in the mobile access. Having recently joined the iPhone crowd, the free app it offers is superb. I can carry various translations around with me, access off-line and complete my daily readings in Costa over a hot chocolate. With the journal feature it’s also handy for taking along to house group or for taking note along a text during a sermon.
